Ratbag Joy was born out of nightlife — but not the glossy, glamorous version. I wrote it at a time when the scene felt darker than it had in the past. I saw people getting stuck in cycles of drugs, alcohol, sex — chasing highs, numbing emptiness, mistaking escape for joy. The genius of nightlife is that it disguises pain with euphoria. You put on the outfit, step into the lights, drown yourself in music, and for a few hours, you feel alright tonight. But the come-down always arrives. The emptiness is still there in the morning.
