There’s something refreshingly unpolished about “It’s Gonna Get Heavy,” and I point that out as a compliment. Kev Howell writes like someone who lives virtually thru what he presumably makes the song, and it comes through on every line. The full band gives the tune a real warm temperature, the guitars and rhythm section tapping on the back of a vocal that sounds first-class tired, like something has been through and is coming out the opposite side. It sits conveniently between indie rock and pa, but underneath is a bluesy grit that never feels too arranged.
The song builds patiently, letting the quieter moments breathe before the chorus opens, and leaves you no longer entirely sure when it snuck up on you. This is where nothing feels forced or overwhelming. It’s the kind of music that you put on just out of curiosity and gets played again because it grows on you. If you’re a singer-songwriter who leans towards a heavier, guitar-driven sound without shedding their softer side, this one is really worth some time.
