Flywheel

Flywheel: Three Decades of Shoegaze Music 🎸

Hailing from Cork, Ireland, Flywheel are a veteran shoegaze outfit whose musical journey spans three decades of sonic exploration. The core lineup—Ann Marie Ryan on vocals, Mark Tangney and Kieran Curtin on guitars, and Paul Kelleher on bass—first came together in the early 1990s, releasing their debut album “She” through Swedish label IWH in 1996. After an extended hiatus, the band reformed in late 2020 during the first lifting of Irish COVID restrictions, bringing renewed energy and focus to their craft.

Song’s review

Flywheel: Atmospheric New Music with Dreamy Guitars

Flywheel‘s “I Want to Join the Fall” drifts by like a half-forgotten summer season, all blurred guitars and echo-soaked longing. From the primary chord, the tune wraps itself in that traditional dream pop fog, but there’s shine underneath, a put up-punk pulse that maintains things without ever going completely weightless. Lady’s voice moves with the flow somewhere between whispered hymns, delivering a song that feels less sung, tormented, and unguarded than sighing inwardly in a pleasant way.

What makes playing this tune again is how it balances the melancholy with the quiet pain of joy. The shoegaze textures swirl and blur, but the melody remains sharp enough to hum long after it fades. There’s a psychedelic charm to the production, as visible colors bleed into every different of the dream threshold. Flywheel won’t just borrow from the greats of the style, they bend it into something personal and on site. “I Want to Join the Fall” is the look of the track that makes you fall as opposed to actually paying attention.
