Johan Smits: A Lifelong Passion for Country Music

Johan Smits aka John Smyths was born in March 1961 in the old town of Nijmegen and was introduced to the world of music by his parents and older brother. Although it wasn’t the kind of music he liked, it was music. When his wild years were over, he got more and more into country music and listened to Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, Alan Jackson, George Strait and so on.

Johan Smits – Memories and Empty Bottles

Johan Smits’s Memories and Empty Bottles is the kind of album that sounds pleasantly spent in the evening, when the day has sooner or later long quieted down it sits easily between Americana, America and traditional rock, with a singer-songwriter’s eye for small real details. His voice is unhurried and genuine, and he never oversells a line. You can tell he believes in songs to make pictures. Songs like this remind you of an amazing story, directed seemingly that clearly, can say more than anything polished.

The arrangements move between a smooth, re-stripped track, and a fuller, warmer sound, both fitting the fabric perfectly. Nothing feels crowded, so there’s space to get down to the songs. It is simple listening in a beautiful experience: comfortable, familiar, and quietly transferred. A warm, vintage feel cleanses every piece of music to sit with. If you grew up on traditional information or miss music made with certain tenacity, then this one really deserves a niche on your playlist. Give it a complete concentrate and see if you have any tracks left.
