Andy Smythe‘s “Beautiful Day” is one of those songs that just feels right with the windows down. It relies on acoustic rock as its foundation, yet there may be a real power-pop sweetness running through it as well — you can hear a sliver of that old Beach Boys sunshine in the harmonies Smith won’t transcend either of those, which I recognize; Instead of him trying to prove something, passion will communicate things. The songwriting has a simple, almost Beatles-like goodness — a solid hook, a song that doesn’t try too hard, and just enough polish to sound finished without losing that homemade feel.
What I like most is how the entire band never generates the folk-pop side of the track. The guitar is alive with warm and slightly unfashionable force, the rhythm has got fussy out of the whole thing wearing collectively, and the whole track sits somewhere between classic rock and easy listening. It’s nostalgic but doesn’t feel like a duplicate of anything special, and it’s catchy without sounding forced. Honestly, “Beautiful Day” lives up to its name — it’s a good-feeling tune, the kind you throw on a playlist for a sunny afternoon, again, approximately not thinking twice
