Deptford Sound Collective Sets the Tone for Fresh Music
I’ll be frank, the name itself made me a hit play, and Deptford Sound Collective didn’t disappoint. This is a tune that is aware of exactly what it wants to be: loud, proud, and totally unhindered by all the people who won’t get it. The pop construction is slick without feeling cold, and the vocals have this exceptional blend of mindset and heat, like a person making a song with a smirk on their face. It’s catchy in that where you capture yourself, gumbaz it later without even that means to.
What I absolutely love, though, is his striking consistency. There’s a Eurovision-ish theatricality to it, spacious and slightly camp, yet it in no way suggests a gimmick. Staying on your floor underneath all of the funny and refusing to cut yourself at all costs to comfort everyone else has a real message. It’s a song that first makes you want to dance and then think about it, which absolutely could be a satisfying form of protest music.
