“The Grace Code” is one of those songs that sneaks up on you. Ricky Earlywine isn’t chasing a huge moment right here — he’s letting the tune breathe, and that poise is what makes it work. He has a real warmth to his voice, something between soul and indie R&B, and it in no way looks like he’s trying too hard to electrify you. There is no need for that. The production stands out of sorts just enough for its voice to convey weight, and sincerely, it truly is harder to pull off than people care.

What I like most is that it doesn’t choose a path and lives in it. There’s pop underneath, positive, yet it’s a soulful, understated sort of thing — nothing sugary or forced. Passions stick with you without being obvious about it, each time you pay attention it seems to pull out something new.
