Flywheel – Shoegaze Music Journey 🎧
Hailing from Cork, Ireland, Flywheel are a veteran shoegaze outfit whose musical journey spans three decades of sonic exploration. The core lineup—Ann Marie Ryan on vocals, Mark Tangney and Kieran Curtin on guitars, and Paul Kelleher on bass—first came together in the early 1990s, releasing their debut album “She” through Swedish label IWH in 1996. After an extended hiatus, the band reformed in late 2020 during the first lifting of Irish COVID restrictions, bringing renewed energy and focus to their craft.
Drawing inspiration from shoegaze and alternative legends including My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, and The Fall, alongside contemporary innovators like Gilla Band, Flywheel have evolved their sound while maintaining the atmospheric intensity that defined their earlier work. This reformation has seen the band embracing a more thematically cohesive approach, with Ann Marie Ryan’s vocals now taking centre stage rather than being buried in the mix as was typical of their earlier shoegaze aesthetic.
